How to Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to JPG

Why your iPhone photos won't open on Windows or upload to a form, and the quickest ways to turn them into JPG.

Updated October 2026

What HEIC is

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It keeps the same quality as JPG at about half the file size, and it can hold extras such as Live Photos and depth information.

The catch is support. Apple's apps and recent Macs open it, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, photo printers and government or job portals don't, and show an error or refuse the upload.

Convert HEIC to JPG

JPG is the most compatible choice. Pick HEIC to PNG when you need lossless files for further editing, or HEIC to PDF to put document photos into one PDF.

  1. Copy the photos from the iPhone to your computer, or open this page on the phone itself.
  2. Open HEIC to JPG and choose the photos; you can add many at once.
  3. Download the JPGs. They're converted in your browser, so personal photos aren't uploaded anywhere.

Make the iPhone save JPG instead

This uses more storage, because JPG files are larger. Another option is to keep HEIC and set Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic, which converts photos to JPG when you copy them to a computer by cable.

  1. Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats.
  2. Choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG (and videos as H.264) from now on.

Uploading to forms

After converting, most iPhone photos are still 1–3 MB, which is too large for exam and job forms. Compress the JPG to the KB limit the form asks for, or use the exam photo tools, which convert, resize and compress in one step.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?
Windows needs an extra codec for HEIC, which isn't installed on many PCs. Converting the photo to JPG makes it open everywhere without installing anything.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
Only very slightly, and not visibly at high quality. The JPG file will be larger than the HEIC.
Can I convert several HEIC photos at once?
Yes. Choose all of them together and download the converted JPGs.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
