How to Increase Photo Quality (and Fix a Blurry Photo)

What actually makes a photo look low quality, and how to make it clearer and bigger.

Updated October 2026

Why photos lose quality

  • Too few pixels: a small picture, a thumbnail or a crop of a bigger photo looks soft when it's shown large.
  • Compression: apps like WhatsApp and social networks shrink photos, which blurs fine detail and adds blocky artefacts.
  • Blur and noise: low light makes photos grainy, and a moving hand or subject smears them.

Make a photo clearer with AI

The AI rebuilds the photo at a higher resolution, sharpening edges and cleaning up noise and compression blocks. It works on your device, so the photo isn't uploaded.

  1. Open the AI Photo Enhancer and choose the photo.
  2. Pick 4× for small photos (under about 1000 pixels) or 2× for photos that are already fairly large.
  3. Press Enhance photo, drag the slider to compare before and after, and download it.

What AI can and can't fix

Enhancing works best on photos that are small, slightly soft or heavily compressed. It can't recover detail from a photo that is completely out of focus or badly shaken; the result will be cleaner, but still soft. In that case, a new photo is the only real fix.

Keep quality high from the start

  • Share the original photo, not one that was already forwarded or downloaded from social media.
  • When a form needs a small file, compress once to the exact size with a Compress image to N KB page instead of shrinking it several times.
  • Save edited photos as PNG if you plan to edit them again; each JPG save loses a little quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a blurry photo clear?
Use the AI Photo Enhancer: it sharpens soft edges and removes compression blocks and grain. It helps most with mild blur; a photo that is badly out of focus can't be fully fixed.
How do I make a photo HD?
Enlarge it 4× with the AI Photo Enhancer. A 480-pixel-wide photo becomes 1920 pixels wide, which is Full HD, with new detail instead of a blurry stretch.
Does the photo enhancer add a watermark?
No. It's free, with no sign-up, no credits and no watermark, and the photo never leaves your device.
