Passport Size Photo Size in India (cm, Pixels, Inches and KB)

The standard size, what it is in pixels for online forms, and how to print a sheet of them at home or at a photo shop.

Updated October 2026

The standard size: 3.5 × 4.5 cm

In India a passport size photo is 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high (35 × 45 mm, about 1.38 × 1.77 inches), in colour, on a plain white or light background, with the face looking straight at the camera. The same size is used on most exam, job and ID forms that ask for a passport size photo.

The United States uses a different, square size: 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). Visa photos for other countries can differ too, so always check the size printed on the form or the embassy's website.

Passport size photo in pixels

Pixels depend on the resolution (DPI) the form expects. The same 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo is:

  • 276 × 354 pixels at 200 DPI, common on Indian online forms.
  • 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI, the usual print resolution.
  • If a form gives its own pixel size, such as 200 × 230, use exactly that instead.

File size (KB) for online forms

Online forms limit the file size as well as the dimensions, most often 20–50 KB for the photo, saved as a JPG. A phone photo is several MB, so it has to be resized and compressed. The Photo Resizer for Exam does both at once: it crops to 3.5 × 4.5 cm and makes a JPG inside the KB range you set, and checks a photo you already have.

Print passport size photos at home or a shop

  1. Open the Passport Photo Maker and upload a clear photo, ideally with a white background. Use the Background Remover first if yours is busy.
  2. Choose 35 × 45 mm and 4 × 6 inch photo paper (8 photos) or A4 (36 photos), and centre your face.
  3. Download the sheet and print it at 100% / Actual size, not Fit to page, or take the JPG to a photo shop and ask for a 4 × 6 inch print.
